Centro Comunitario de Trabajadores
The 2024 election has heightened fear and uncertainty within our community, particularly among our largely Central American immigrant constituency. Many are indigenous Maya K’iche’ from Guatemala, carrying the trauma of past massacres and racial discrimination. To support healing, we integrate traditional healing with Western medicine through community meetings, focus groups, and partnerships with healthcare practitioners. Additionally, we are collaborating with Maya K’iche’ teachers to reconnect members with their cultural heritage through language, dance, marimba music, and ceremonial practices. This work, beginning virtually, will culminate in in-person teachings and ceremonies in New Bedford, reclaiming suppressed traditions.
